Dealing with Wet Carpeting After a Bathroom Leak in Watertown

10/9/2017 (Permalink)

Trained SERVPRO Technicians Investigate the Extent of the Damage and Then Determine the Most Effective Remediation Plan

When you have had a severe upstairs bathroom leak, that room is not the only affected area of your home. The ceiling and room below are also affected, meaning repairs need to be done to the ceiling, walls, and even flooring below the bathroom. With this level of damage in your Watertown home, you need the help of professionals right away.

Water damage in your Watertown bathroom is troublesome enough, but when it is a big enough disaster, much more of your home is unfortunately affected. SERVPRO and their expert technicians can come to your rescue, however, as we are a trained and certified water damage remediation company who do not waste time in answering your call for help.

Besides all the other damages to your home, one thing that needs to be considered is the carpeting in the room under your bathroom. Of course, the primary goal when restoring water damage is to protect and preserve your structure and contents. One of the first concerns in a case like this is carpeting and padding that is saturated with water.

Two basic problems that present itself are delamination, or the backing separating from the carpet, and latex deterioration. Carpet has two different backings. Latex is the adhesive which holds the carpet fibers to the first backing, and it also holds the secondary and primary backings to each other. It begins to deteriorate as soon as the carpeting is installed, and breaks down from gases in the area, plus traffic and sunlight.

If delamination is present, it cannot be fixed and must be replaced. Also, water damage to glue-down carpeting could cause bubbling, which occurs from loss of adhesive, not cleaning or extraction. If the bubbled area is small, SERVPRO staff may be able to fix it. Otherwise, the carpet may need to be replaced in this situation as well.

Many water disaster situations require the padding to be replaced. It can break apart when it is wet. Most padding is fortunately inexpensive, and the cost of removing and replacing it is many times less than drying the carpeting with the pad in place. If any sewage water has come from your bathroom and damaged your carpeting, it also needs to be replaced.
