Tornado Preparedness Tips

Wilson County tornadoes are violent forces of nature that can suddenly strike with very little or no notice, bringing devastation to entire communities within moments. A tornado warning indicates imminent threats to property and lives, so if you are located in a district that is at high risk for tornadoes, it is imperative to prepare for such a catastrophic event by reviewing a few safety tips for survival.

There are a number of precautions you can take before a twister strikes, in order to help reduce the potential for harm to you and your family. Follow these emergency plan guidelines in preparation of a Wilson County tornado.

Disaster Awareness
Regions that are subject to tornadoes usually have a siren warning system set in place. Be sure you and your family are aware of the tornado warning siren sounds, so that you are equipped to take action before the twister touches ground. Another option is to purchase an NOAA weather radio that will sound a loud alert upon the issuance of a tornado warning. In the event of a severe thunderstorm or tornado watch, it is also advisable to turn on the television or radio, in an attempt to stay informed on the latest weather activity.

Store Important Documents
An essential process in Wilson County tornado readiness is to protect important documents such as, birth certificates, social security cards, insurance policies, wills, and vehicle titles against damage. In order to guard these items, it is recommended to preserve them in a lockable safe that is both fire and water-resistant. Significant valuables and keepsakes should be sealed away as well.

Prepare an Evacuation Route
One of the simplest methods to minimize the likelihood of injury during the passage of a tornado is to create a floor plan for your home or building that identifies all of the possible exit routes. It is highly recommended to identify at least two exit paths from each room. Then, determine which community facilities are the best locations to occupy during a storm. Once a plan is formed, review it with your family and consider running practice drills to help ensure all family members understand the strategy.

Safety Precautions
Prior to a severe storm or tornado, secure your home with an emergency preparedness kit, which includes a first-aid kit, fire extinguishers, and other items that will be beneficial in the midst of a disaster. Mark the location of these items on your emergency floor plan and consider reviewing basic first aid procedures with your family. In addition, identify the sources of your water, gas, and electricity so they can quickly be shut off, should a Wilson County tornado touch down.

Take Shelter
Evacuation is not always possible. As a precaution, determine the safest places in your building to take cover. In general, the best location to endure a tornado is in an interior room without any windows such as, a closet, basement, storm shelter, or lowest level of a building. Cover up with blankets, pillows, mattresses, tables, and other structures as a shield against falling debris.
