As we are gearing up for colder weather here in Middle Tennessee, it is important to be aware of a phenomenon that wreaked havoc on this area in 2015. For the first time in recent history, the first episode of wide spread Ice Daming damaged hundreds of homes in Middle Tennessee.
An ice dam occurs when packed snow or ice melts at different speeds depending on the slopes of the roofs. As the water melts at faster rates and moves down the roof, areas with a backup of ice cause a puddle. While there may not be damage immediately, as it stays below freezing for multiple days it can cause serious damage.
Most of the time homeowners are unaware of the issue until water is coming into their home. If you do notice that water is coming in, follow these three steps:
- Remove wet materials near the affected area
- Place a fan to slow the leak
- Call a water restoration expert
If you follow these three steps, you will greatly increase the likelihood of mitigating your damages.
